Asake silent on YBNL exit
A few weeks ago, Nigerian music sensation Asake made headlines when he deleted all Yahoo Boy No Laptop, YBNL-related content from his social media and unfollowed his mentor, Olamide.
The singer has been a major force in the music industry since he was introduced by Olamide on the platform of YBNL some years ago. However, during a recent Instagram live session monitored by Tribuneonline, the singer chose not to address these actions. Instead, he discussed his latest album, “Lungu Boy.”
The project features collaborations with major artists like Wizkid, Central Cee, Travis Scott, Stormzy, and Ludmilla. It has already broken streaming records and showcased Asake’s evolving musical journey.
Lungu Boy has quickly gained traction, with Asake’s collaboration with Wizkid setting a new record for the highest opening day streams for a song on Spotify Nigeria.
The album itself has also shattered records for opening day streams, signaling Asake’s growing influence in the global music scene. His ability to draw in big names from both local and international music circles has solidified his status as a major player in the industry. During the Instagram live session, Asake opened up about his preference for singing in Yoruba, despite being able to perform in English.
“Not like I can’t sing in English, but I am more comfortable singing in Yoruba,” he shared. This linguistic choice, he explained, is central to his identity as an artist and resonates deeply with his core fanbase. “So if you fc with me, fc with me in Yoruba,” Asake added.
An important absence on Lungu Boy is Davido, another Nigerian superstar.
When fans asked why Davido wasn’t featured on the album, Asake assured them that their collaboration is still in progress.
He mentioned that they have recorded several tracks together that have yet to be released, suggesting the possibility of future projects that will highlight their combined talents.
Asake also provided some behind-the-scenes insight into his unexpected collaboration with Wizkid on the single ‘MMS’. According to Asake, the song’s producer, P.Priime, played the track for Wizkid, who was immediately captivated by it. Without hesitation, Wizkid decided to contribute a verse, adding a surprise element to the album that even Asake hadn’t anticipated. This spontaneous collaboration has become one of the standout moments of Lungu Boy.
While Asake remained tight-lipped about his current relationship with Olamide and the reasons behind his recent social media activity, his focus on his music and collaborations was evident throughout the session.
He declined to comment on the speculation surrounding his actions, choosing instead to let his music speak for itself as the release of Lungu Boy marks a significant milestone in his career, not just for its commercial success, but for the artistic statement it makes.
